Many are bothered by the look of their profile and one of the main concerns is the pocket of fat that develops just below the chin. Commonly referred to as a double chin, this condition is medically known as “submental fullness.” Submental fullness can be caused by weight gain, DNA, or aging. Some who experience submental fullness may not be able to lose this area of fat even with persistent diet and exercise. Kybella is a prescription injection used to rid the area below the chin of excess fat cells. Kybella could be a solution to finally getting rid of your double chin if you are bothered by the look of your profile, you are not looking to have surgery, and diet/exercise has not improved the look of the area beneath your chin in the past.

Kybella is administered as a series of small injections. Most patients achieve the results they are looking for after 4 to 6 treatment sessions. Kybella works by delivering a dose of synthetic deoxycholic acid to fat cells. This acid is already naturally occurring in the body and assists in breaking down and absorbing fat. When Kybella is injected right beneath the chin, the active ingredient works to eliminate the fat cells so fat can no longer be stored in this area.  The results achieved using Kybella are permanent so no further treatment to the area will be needed once the desired look has been reached.

At the time of treatment, a trained healthcare provider will administer a series of small injections just below the chin. Each treatment will only take about 15 minutes or so. You can receive up to 6 Kybella treatment session and each treatment must be administered one month apart. Depending on the look you would like to achieve, you and your healthcare provider will determine a treatment plan that is appropriate for your goals.

As with all medical procedures, there are always some risks to factor into your decision. Side effects from using Kybella to treat submental fullness can be swelling, pain, and numbness of the treated area. Talk with your healthcare provider to determine if Kybella is the right treatment for you. After treatment of Kybella, recovery time is minimal. You will most likely have some swelling in the area and bruising and numbness may also occur.
