What is DOT Therapy?

The SmartXide DOT laser is an innovative fractional CO2 skin resurfacing device that provides patients with comprehensive skin rejuvenation and anti-aging benefits with minimal downtime. Patients who typically benefit from DOT resurfacing include those with skin discoloration associated with sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, skin laxity, crepey skin and stretch marks. DOT therapy can be performed safely on most skin types.

Unlike traditional CO2 lasers, the SmartXide laser uses DOT (Derma Optical Thermolysis) to penetrate the skin and vaporize small areas of skin instead of the entire outer layer of the skin. The skin left intact by the SmartXide DOT provides bridges to the treated skin enabling faster recovery. Heat produced by the laser penetrates into the dermis of the skin causing an immediate tightening of the collagen already present. That same laser heat also stimulates the collagen producing cells in the dermis, known as fibroblasts, to begin producting new collagen.

The results of the laser treatment to the outer layer of skin erases years of damage therby providing a more youthful and healthy appearance. The new collagen, which is produced in the dermis, takes about thirty days to form. The new collagen is the result of the healing process and gives skin additional strength helping to improve skin laxity, acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles.

DOT Therapy Benefits

Reverse the appearance of aged and sun damaged skin Improve texture and laxity Smooth wrinkles Reduce the appearance of acne and other scars

How Long Does the Procedure Take?

The actual DOT procedure takes between 20-30 minutes to perform. Patients will be started on medication for antiviral prophylaxis three days prior to the procedure. On the day of the procedure each patient will receive oral medication for conscious sedation and a topical numbing cream applied for 1 hour prior to the procedure to ensure comfort. After the laser treatment is performed the patient is cooled for 25 minutes and a topical skin treatment will be applied. Patients are asked to arrange for transportation to and from their procedure that day.

What is the Recovery Time?

The recovery time for the DOT varies depending on how aggressive the treatment is and other factors. Typically, most patients experience redness for seven or more days after the procedure and will have some peeling. Most patients who wear makeup will be able to resume wearing makeup about 7 days post procedure. We encourage all of our patients to be compliant with the after-care instructions and skin care products provided to them. One year of Gentle Waves LED treatments, a Vibraderm, two Hydrafacials and Glo Minerals makeup are provided as part of the DOT aftercare package. It is important to remember that it takes approximately thirty days after the procedure for new collagen to develop in the dermis of the skin. Therefore, one should not judge the results of their procedure for four to six months.

How Many Treatments are Required?

In most cases a single treatment provides outstanding results. In some cases with severe lines, wrinkles, scarring or skin laxity additional treatments may be beneficial.
